Just to add some points from my experinece - most of the cheks and warnings on the instrument cluster also works (pop up) when change gear shift from P to D or R. I observe this behaviour with low washer fluid and also with burnt bulbs. When vehicle is on P there is no warning, when switch to D or R there is imediatelly a warning on the display! I do not know is this a bug or normal behaviour of the instrument cluster.

I'm leaning towards a bug on the gear selector because the same thing as you on the tel or radio selection mode in P or N mode, once in D / S or R mode no problem.
